Recently, parents of the students at Buckfield/Hartford Summer have proposed the idea of separating from the RSU10. One of the leading parents, Neal Austin, was kind enough to share some of the reasons why. For starters, he stated that there were many advantages to separating.

Austin stated that a few of the advantages are more local control, a feeling that the residents’ property tax bills stay here in the 3 towns for our own district, and Potentially being able to change how we teach the school kids to find alternative ways to still meet the state and federal mandates, but in a better way that might improve educational scores and student outcomes.

These parents believe that some of these decisions could be better handled at the local level rather than in Rumford. A great example of this would be the snow days.

Some cons of separating would be sports. Buckfield Junior-Senior High School wouldn’t be able to fund most of the sports we have now by itself. Buckfield’s operating budget would be much smaller if it were not combined to rumfords. If parents want to keep things like this, they would have to pay more themselves for what would come out of their taxes.
